Historic Resource Survey and Multiple Property Documentation Form
Detroit’s Latinx Communities
Detroit, Michigan
Completed 2023*
The histories of Detroit’s Latinx communities are woven from broad historical trends that influenced Detroit, Michigan, and the United States, ranging from national immigration trends to regional migration trends stemming from the cyclical nature of Michigan’s sugar beet farming industry and Detroit’s automobile industry. This project was multifaceted and included a reconnaissance survey, intensive level survey, development of a survey report, and creation of a Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPDF) from which future National Register nominations for Detroit’s Latinx communities can build off of.
Cassandra and Katie combed through a myriad of sources to comprehensively document Detroit’s Latinx communities. Oral histories with important Latinx leaders were pivotal in understanding the experiences of Latinx residents. Detroit’s Latinx residents have a history of strong community-based preservation, therefore, an advisory group was formed and multiple public engagement meetings were held in partnership with the City’s Historic Designation Advisory Board to tap into the community’s existing knowledge.
