Historic Resource Survey
Winchell Avenue
Kalamazoo, Michigan
2025*
Winchell Avenue is one of the primary thoroughfares through the Winchell neighborhood in Kalamazoo. Stretching between Oakland Drive and Asylum Lake, Winchell is lined with residences, two churches, and a school. The Third Christian Reformed Church, the Winchell Avenue Christian Church, and Winchell Elementary School were all architect designed. Towards Oakland Drive, Winchell’s cross streets are lined with early-twentieth century residences in popular styles like Tudor and Colonial Revival. Moving westward, the Ranch and Modern Movement styles predominate reflecting continued development of the neighborhood in the mid-twentieth century.
Katie and Cassandra’s role was to conduct an architectural survey of Winchell Avenue in preparation for the installation of a sidewalk on the south side of the road. To place the resources along Winchell within their historic context, Katie and Cassandra delved into the history of the surrounding subdivisions, whose growth fostered the need for Winchell Elementary and the neighborhood churches.
